Single-tooth implants consist of two parts: the implant itself (a small titanium rod that acts as an artificial tooth root) and a dental crown (a false tooth). Full-arch implants are quite different, and are only used if a patient has lost most or all of their natural teeth. For full-arch implants, a series of 4-6 implants are placed into your upper and lower gum lines. Then, these implants are used to support fixed dental bridges or removable implant-supported dentures.
Dental crowns are often used to complete a single-tooth implant. Your crown will be built to look just like a natural tooth, and will attach to your dental implant once your gums heal after surgery. When the crown is bonded into place, it functions just like a natural tooth.
For full-arch implants, fixed implant-supported bridges may be used. These are usually made of acrylic and porcelain, and they are permanently attached to a series of 4-6 implants. This treatment is often called “All-On-Four”. These restorations are not intended to be removable, and they are left in place 24/7.
Implant-supported dentures can also be used to replace a full arch of teeth, but unlike All-On-Four, they are not fixed in place. They snap onto a specially-designed, implant-supported bar and are held in place tightly so you can eat, chew and speak normally. However, they are meant to be removed daily for cleaning.
Single-tooth dental implants can be treated just like a natural tooth. Simply brush and floss normally, and see your dentist in Margate for regular six-month cleanings. To clean fixed dental bridges, use a Waterpik or another water flosser at least twice per day, and floss under the bridge once per day. Using a small toothbrush, you should also clean the transition area between your gums and the bridge. Daily rinsing with mouthwash is also recommended.
For implant-supported denture, you can treat them just like normal dentures. Brush them when you remove them each night, clean your gums and implants with a soft-bristled toothbrush, and place your dentures in a denture soaking solution overnight.
If you are missing one or more teeth and are looking for a permanent solution to restore your smile, you may be a good candidate for dental implants. During your consultation, Dr. Jean will assess the health of your gums and jaw to determine whether your mouth is healthy enough to support a dental implant. No. During your dental implant surgery, Dr. Jean will use local anesthesia to completely numb the nerves around the treatment area. You will not be able to feel any pain or discomfort during your implant placement surgery.
We also offer both nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation and oral conscious sedation with a pill, so if you need additional sedation to stay calm and comfortable throughout your surgery, the team at Lifestyle Dental Care is here for you.
However, it is important to know that you will experience some pain and discomfort after your surgery. Once your numbing and sedation wear off, your implant site may feel painful. It may also bleed, and you may notice bruising, swelling, and inflammation near the implant site for a few days.
This is normal, and to be expected. After your surgery, Dr. Jean will provide you with tips and advice on how to deal with pain, and he will also give you a set of recovery instructions you need to follow after your operation. By following his instructions closely, you can reduce your pain and discomfort, heal faster, and get back to your day-to-day routine more quickly.
The term “dental implant” is commonly used to refer to both the metal post that’s surgically implanted into your mouth, and to the prosthetic that restores your smile, such as a dental crown. However, this is not technically correct.
The term “dental implant” is usually used by dentists to refer to the metal implant that functions as an artificial tooth root, while the term “dental implant restoration” is used to refer to the prosthetic that attaches to the dental implant and replaces your tooth.
The most common types of dental implant restorations are dental crowns, implant-supported bridges, and implant-supported dentures. You can learn more about each type of dental implant restoration on this page from Lifestyle Dental Care in the section that’s called “What Types Of Implant Restorations Are Available?”
Your dental implant will last 30+ years with proper care. In fact, most patients will be able to keep their dental implants for the rest of their lives without any complications or replacements.
That’s because of the unique way that dental implants work. The implant integrates itself into your natural jaw bone material, and essentially becomes a natural part of your mouth. It’s bonded tightly to your jaw, and will never loosen or fall out if you care for it properly.
However, you do need to make sure to maintain good oral hygiene. Dental implants can fail if the gum tissue near the implant becomes infected. This is known as “peri-implantitis.” Avoiding this issue is simple. As long as you brush and floss regularly, eat a healthy diet, and take other steps like quitting smoking, you will reduce your risk of this complication significantly.
You also should make sure to see Dr. Philippe Jean for an oral exam and teeth cleaning every 6 months. At this time, Dr. Jean can check on your dental implant, make sure it’s healthy, and give you tips on how to keep your mouth healthy and prevent any potential complications.
