At our office, we use composite materials to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay. Composite fillings are made from a durable dental resin material and they are designed to match the color of your surrounding teeth perfectly. Compared to traditional metal amalgam fillings, composite fillings are more conservative, can last just as long, and offer better cosmetic results.
For these reasons, we are a metal-free practice when it comes to fillings and restorations. By using composite fillings, we offer a better patient experience, a stronger restoration, and a higher overall level of dental care.
Root canal therapy is a procedure used to save your natural tooth if the inner pulp has become infected. An infection occurs when the hard, strong layers of enamel and dentin that protect your tooth become damaged due to decay or an oral injury.
As the outer layers of your tooth are weakened, the vulnerable “pulp” inside your tooth can become infected. This pulp contains nerves and blood vessels that keep your tooth alive. If you do not get proper care, your tooth will eventually need to be extracted.
During root canal therapy, a small hole is made in your tooth and Dr. Jean uses special dental tools to remove the decayed, infected material. Then, your tooth is flushed with disinfectant to kill any remaining bacteria. Finally, the structure of your tooth will be restored with a filling or a crown.
Crowns are designed to fit over a damaged tooth and cover up the remaining enamel all the way down to the gumline. Essentially, a crown is an artificial tooth that is permanently attached to your remaining tooth structure. Crowns are typically used to restore teeth that have been damaged by extensive decay or an oral injury. They are also sometimes used to protect a tooth that has been treated with a root canal, or to replace large or failing dental fillings. Our lab-made crowns are built by our partner dental labs, and they are crafted from high-quality ceramic materials.
The importance of restorative dental care cannot be overstated. Restorative care replaces missing teeth to prevent bone loss, restore the smile, and assist in a patient’s ability to chew and speak clearly.
Root canals treat infections to save your tooth from extraction and prevent the infection from spreading to the other teeth or worse, through your bloodstream which can cause serious health issues like sepsis.
Damaged teeth need to be repaired to prevent chips and cracks from breaking the tooth in half or leading to infection. This can also cause insecurity in your smile and decreased confidence. When a tooth is damaged from dental trauma or becomes infected from untreated tooth decay, you’ll likely be in a lot of pain.
Restorative treatment relieves pain by treating the source of the problem. Fillings repair holes in the teeth caused by early-stage tooth decay and prevent the need for much more invasive and costly treatment.
Crowns add strength and durability to a damaged or weakened tooth to enable the tooth to be used for chewing without the risk of breakage. This is often needed after dental trauma, root canal therapy, and large fillings.
Even extractions serve their purpose, such as relieving pain and repeated problems with wisdom teeth, making room for orthodontic treatment, or removing a tooth that is beyond repair so it can be replaced.
You don’t have to worry about dealing with pain when you undergo restorative dental treatment. This is because we always resort to the least invasive procedures possible to restore the health of your tooth and we always numb your mouth with a local anesthetic before using any dental tools.
This ensures that you don’t feel any discomfort during the procedure, though you may feel some pressure from the tools being used on your tooth. It will be painless. We also offer dental sedation for patients with dental anxiety or low pain tolerance to make the experience even more comfortable.
Restorative treatments relieve pain from infection, dental trauma, tooth decay, and gum disease. After the treatment is finished and the anesthetic has worn off, you may feel some slight soreness or tenderness around the tooth for a day or two, but this should be mild and respond well to anti-inflammatory pain medication.
There are generally 3 tiers of coverage with dental insurance. Preventative care receives the most coverage, with 100% of these treatments like cleanings, x-rays, and fluoride treatments being covered.
The next tier is basic restorative treatment like fillings and root canals, and extractions, which are covered at 80%. Then, there’s major restorative work like dental crowns, dental implants, and bridges which are usually covered at 50%. Cosmetic dentistry is not covered by dental insurance.
Based on this tiered system, your insurance is likely to cover your root canal treatment by up to 80%. However, the exact amount can vary by plan and you may have other requirements to meet like waiting periods and deductibles.
Contact your insurance provider to find out what they will cover. If you don’t have dental insurance, we offer financing options through CareCredit and Proceed Finance.
