Gum disease affects millions of Americans, and many people are unaware that they suffer from this serious oral health issue
If it’s left untreated, gum disease is irreversible and can cause permanent damage to the teeth and gums
Dr. Jean has years of experience in periodontal care, and can restore your smile in Margate
With personalized periodontal care, you can keep your smile healthy and strong and halt or reverse the effects of gum disease
Gingivitis is a term that’s used to refer to the first stage of gum disease. This stage of gum disease usually has minor symptoms like bleeding gums, gum discoloration and swelling, gum tenderness, and halitosis (bad breath).
The term “gum disease” or “periodontal disease” is usually used to refer to the second stage of gum disease, when irreversible damage has been done to the teeth and gums, but proper intervention can still halt the progression of the disease and allow you to maintain your oral health.
In this stage of gum infection, patients may notice more serious symptoms like gum recession, which makes the teeth look longer, soreness and tenderness of the gums and teeth, or pain and discomfort when chewing.
The first stage of gum disease, gingivitis, can be completely reversed and eliminated with proper at-home oral hygiene and periodontal care from a dentist.
However, once the disease progresses and causes permanent damage to your teeth and gums, it is not reversible. It can be controlled, but it will never be eliminated entirely, and you will need to see a dentist for regular periodontal cleanings to keep the disease under control for the rest of your life.
This is why early intervention and proper at-home oral hygiene are so important. If you treat gum disease early, it’s reversible, but if you wait too long, its harmful effects will be permanent.
The best way to avoid gum disease is to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes, floss once a day, and see a dentist in Margate for a teeth cleaning and oral exam every six months. Proper at-home oral hygiene is essential for gum disease prevention.
If you already have gingivitis or a more serious case of gum disease, the first step for treatment is typically a deep cleaning (scaling & root planing). In this procedure, Dr. Jean will scrape plaque and tartar away from the teeth and gums, and smooth out the roots of your teeth to eliminate bacteria. Antibiotics may also be used to fight back against bacteria.
If this is not enough to treat your case of gum disease, you may need further surgical intervention like gum flap surgery or gum grafting to restore your gums and protect your smile. Dr. Jean will discuss your options in further detail after your initial consultation at Lifestyle Dental Care.
