We offer sedation and additional comforts like weighted blankets and pillows to ensure you feel safe throughout the procedure
Basic extractions are the simplest and fastest method of tooth extraction. The procedure begins with the numbing of the treatment area. Sedation can also be administered, if desired. Once the treatment area has become completely numb, Dr. Jean will loosen your tooth using specialized dental tools. Once the tooth has been sufficiently loosened, Dr. Jean will use dental forceps to grasp the tooth by the root and extract it. After extraction, the area will be cleaned and disinfected. Then, the socket will be sutured shut.
Surgical extractions are typically required for wisdom teeth if they have not erupted properly, and are still partially stuck in the gums. During treatment, your Margate dentist will create a small incision in the gums in order to access the root of the tooth. Next, the tooth will be extracted through this opening using specialized dental tools. Once all of the tooth structure has been removed, the area will be disinfected and cleaned, then sutured shut to complete the procedure.
Teeth may need to be removed for a variety of reasons. If your tooth is too damaged to be saved with a treatment like a root canal, or is loose due to gum disease, it may need to be removed.
Tooth extractions are also usually required when the wisdom teeth start to grow in between the ages of 17-25, as most patients typically do not have enough space in their mouths for them to erupt properly. Removal may also be necessary to prepare for orthodontic treatment or for a restorative treatment like the placement of dentures, a dental bridge, or a dental implant.
It usually takes about 7-10 days for your mouth to fully heal after tooth extraction. For several days after your surgery, you may experience bruising, swelling, bleeding and pain. You will need to eat a soft diet and take it easy for at least a few days after your extraction. Dr. Jean will provide you with a comprehensive set of aftercare and recovery instructions, so make sure you follow them to avoid any potential complications during the healing process.
The tooth extraction process won’t hurt at all. At Lifestyle Dental Care, Dr. Philippe Jean has years of experience with tooth extractions in Margate. Using his extensive training, numbing spray, and numbing injections, he will completely numb the nerves in your mouth that are near the extraction site. You may feel some pressure during your extraction, but you will not feel any pain at all.
We also offer sedation dentistry in Margate, such as laughing gas sedation. This can help you feel more comfortable and less anxious about your tooth extraction, so ask Dr. Jean about your sedation options before your extraction appointment.
After your procedure, you will start to feel some pain and discomfort once your sedation and numbing begin to wear off. This is to be expected, and it’s your body’s natural reaction to the tooth extraction process.
Dr. Jean will provide you with a set of instructions to follow as you heal and recover. Follow these closely to deal with your pain, discomfort, and other symptoms like bleeding and bruising. Pain usually peaks and then begins to fade within 24-48 hours of your treatment. We recommend taking a day or two off of work or school, if possible.
Tooth extractions at our office are always the last resort. Dr. Jean practices conservative dentistry. This means that he focuses on saving your natural teeth whenever it’s possible to do so.
Usually, your teeth only need to be extracted if they are severely damaged and infected, so that means that the most common alternative to tooth extraction is root canal therapy. Root canal therapy is a procedure that involves opening up your tooth, removing decayed and damaged pulp from inside the tooth, then filling the tooth with an inert, biocompatible material and sealing it with a filling or a dental crown.
When a root canal is done in time, it can completely eliminate the infection, rid you of your pain and discomfort, and preserve your tooth for years to come. This makes it the best alternative to tooth extraction. If Dr. Jean believes that your tooth can be saved, he will always recommend a root canal before he recommends a tooth extraction.
In some cases, though, your tooth may not be treatable with alternatives like a root canal. If this is the case, Dr. Jean will recommend that you have the tooth extracted and replaced. So make sure you get help as soon as you can if you think you have an infected tooth. The sooner you seek treatment, the more likely it is that you’ll be able to save your tooth.
Yes. Once you’ve lost a tooth, you should get a replacement like a partial denture, a dental bridge, or a dental implant right away. Losing one or more natural teeth can affect your appearance, make it harder to eat and speak, and result in further complications like teeth shifting or jaw bone loss, depending on the situation.
After your extraction at Lifestyle Dental Care, Dr. Jean will discuss your options for tooth replacement in Margate, and will help you choose the tooth replacement option that’s right for you based on your budget, your needs, and your preferences.
