In-office teeth whitening is done by Dr. Jean at our office, and allows you to whiten your smile by up to 10 shades in a single consultation. At your appointment, he will apply protectant to your gums, protect your cheeks and tongue with cheek retractors, then apply a powerful peroxide whitener to your teeth.
This whitener will be activated with UV light to boost its whitening power, then rinsed away. Dr. Jean will check the shade of your teeth and repeat this process until you’ve reached your desired level of teeth brightness.
Take-home whitening is a great option for busy patients, or those who are more comfortable treating themselves at home. The process begins with a quick appointment at our office, where Dr. Jean will take molds of your teeth. These dental impressions are sent to an outside lab, where a set of custom-fitted trays will be built.
Then, you’ll just come back to Lifestyle Dental Care to pick up your whitening trays, whitening products, and usage instructions from Dr. Jean. Follow these instructions to whiten your teeth safely and effectively at home. Your end results will be the same as in-office whitening, but you’ll spend less time in the dentist's chair.
Usually, teeth whitening lasts between 1-2 years, though with excellent dental care you may still maintain a bright smile for up to 3 years. To keep your teeth bright, you need to maintain good at-home oral hygiene and come to our office every six months for a teeth cleaning and oral exam.
You also may want to make some lifestyle changes like avoiding certain staining beverages like coffee and tea, and quitting smoking or oral tobacco use, if applicable. your Margate dentists can give you more tips on prolonging the lifespan of your newly whitened smile.
We usually recommend yearly professional whitening touch-ups. This will keep your smile bright and brilliant while avoiding over whitening, which can permanently damage your teeth. The proper treatment varies for each patient, though, so it’s best to consult with Dr. Jean to determine the appropriate whitening interval.
Most patients experience some degree of teeth sensitivity during and after the whitening process. However, this usually lasts only for a few days once whitening treatment is over, and is relatively minor.
There are a few things you can do to help with sensitivity, such as avoiding really hot or cold foods and drinks, brushing regularly, and using Sensodyne or a similar toothpaste meant to help with sensitive teeth.
